Greene: US ‘may be headed for a recession’

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) warned the U.S. “may be headed for recession” in her latest break with the GOP and President Trump, who has insisted prices decreased, dismissing concerns about the economy

“We’re seeing real softening in the economy, as we may be headed for a recession here, as we go into the holidays,” Greene told Fox’s “LiveNow” host Josh Breslow on Friday, adding there had been “enough political drama.”

“I’m calling for both sides, Democrats and Republicans, to do their job and go ahead and fund the CR [continuing resolution] so we can get back to work,” Greene said.

The CR is legislation that would temporarily fund the government while members of both parties negotiate over a full-year funding bill.

But the House-passed resolution has repeatedly failed to get approval in the Senate due to Democrats taking issue with its lack of funding for expiring Affordable Care Act enhanced premium tax credits. The credits allow millions of Americans to access health care at reduced costs.

Greene attributed the government shutdown as contributing to “chaos for the American people” and repeated her suggestion that Senate Republicans use a “nuclear option” that allows them to pass a resolution with a simple majority. At least 60 senators must vote in favor for a bill to pass under usual proceedings in the upper chamber.

She also said the financial hardship faced by Americans contributed to Republicans’ losses at the polls this week.

“I’ll push everyone to pay attention to the true financial hardship that Americans are facing right now,” the Georgia Republican said. “And this is very much affecting my children’s generation, who are 22, 26 and 28, and that generation is looking towards the future with very little hope.”

Greene again criticized Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) for keeping the House out of session while the American people “are going to work every single day.”

“I’m not taking a paycheck during the shutdown, but I know some of my colleagues are,” she said. “And so I think it’s absolutely the worst move and it’s the worst political move to have the House in recess and for us to not be here working.”
