Live updates: Dick Cheney dies; key 2025 elections underway; shutdown ties 35-day record

Former Vice President Dick Cheney died Monday night at 84, his family announced early Tuesday. The architect of the post-9/11 War on Terror and invasion of Iraq, he became one of the most powerful holders of his office.

Voters in New York, Virginia, New Jersey and California, among other places, are heading to the polls Tuesday to cast ballots in elections that will shed light on how Americans feel about President Trump’s second term to date and the Democratic Party.

Here’s what you should watch for.

The Senate will convene Tuesday on Day 35 of the government shutdown, joining the 2018-19 shutdown as the longest in U.S. history. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) indicated Monday that he was “optimistic” the federal government will reopen by the end of the week. But Democrats are divided on how to make a deal to end it.

Some lawmakers are hoping Election Day is the hurdle standing in the way of reopening the government.

President Trump has nothing on his public schedule on Tuesday.
