Live updates: Government shutdown strains increase at 3-week mark

The government shutdown marks three full weeks on Tuesday, with no endgame clear, but another vote set for Wednesday in the Senate on the House-passed funding bill. Meanwhile, the pressure is rising.
Increased delays at major airports are starting to make lawmakers squirm, after a tough weekend. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said Monday there were “increased staffing shortages across the system” on Sunday, backing up flights in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas and Newark, N.J.
And some GOP senators are uneasy with the Trump administration’s plan to cut off transportation funding to “blue states” like New York and Massachusetts during the government shutdown, warning that freezing funds as an apparent act of political retaliation is not appropriate.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) will again address reporters, as has been customary, and will reportedly gather the House GOP conference for a call on Tuesday morning. The House has been out of D.C. for over a month. On Monday, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) suggested it was time for the lower chamber to return.
President Trump is slated to get full use of his new Rose Garden on Tuesday. He’ll host Republican senators there for lunch and he has dinner scheduled for the eponymous club. He’ll also celebrate the Indian holiday Diwali at the White House.
Vice President Vance is in Israel on Tuesday, where he is also slated to give remarks.
