Watch live: Trump meets with Ukraine’s Zelensky at White House

President Trump will host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House on Friday for the third time since returning to office in January.

The first visit was a train wreck; the second, which involved European leaders, went more smoothly.

This time around, Ukraine’s desire for long-range Tomahawk missiles is expected to be a central point of the conversation. The missiles, designed to fly at high subsonic speeds and at low altitudes to better evade radars, would provide Kyiv with the capability to hit military targets and energy facilities deep inside Russia.

On Thursday, Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin and said the two would hold their second summit in Budapest, Hungary, on a date yet to be determined. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will hold talks with Russian officials ahead of the meeting.

Following Trump’s meeting with Putin in Alaska this summer, Trump demanded that Putin and Zelensky meet face-to-face. Putin has thus far rejected direct talks with Ukraine’s leader.

Trump has expressed frustration with Putin, suggesting he’s a “paper tiger” in recent weeks, but he has yet to take any direct punitive actions toward Moscow. A bill placing stiff sanctions on Putin remains stalled in the Senate, though there have been signs this week of some movement.
