Live updates: House sizes up Senate’s version of Trump megabill; Johnson ‘not happy’ but vows passage

The Senate sent President Trump’s agenda legislation to the House after more than a day of amendment votes and critical negotiations, with Vice President Vance breaking the 50-50 tie.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) and allies worked overnight to reach a deal with Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) to pass the legislation. The upper chamber could afford to lose only three votes, and three Republicans voted with Democrats: Rand Paul (Ky.), Thom Tillis (N.C.) and Susan Collins (Maine). After a 27-hour vote-a-rama, the legislation squeaked through.

The House Rules Committee will convene to craft rules for the legislation’s consideration. The House Freedom Caucus warned the bill may not be done by the self-imposed July 4 deadline.

And Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) told reporters Tuesday afternoon he’s “not happy” about what the Senate sent over. “Yeah, I’m not happy with what the Senate did to our product, but we understand this is the process. It goes back and forth, and we’ll be working to get all of our members to ‘yes,’” he said.

Trump, meanwhile, visited a new migrant detention facility in Florida’s Everglades, dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz.” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) joined him for the tour.
