I don’t always vote my philosophy. Sometimes I go with my instincts—my “gut” you might say. That I was the first delegate from North Dakota in 2016 to come out in support of Donald Trump for president is a recent example. I chose Trump because his rhetoric and his actions flew in the face of the political correctness sanctimoniously wielded by the left. And as fate would have it, the unbound delegates in ND were instrumental in putting him ‘’over the top” with their votes while Trump was in Bismarck as the keynote for the ND Petroleum Conference.
I believe North Dakota could have a significant impact on Trump’s bid for election in 2024. Part of that is because of Sen. Kevin Cramer’s close relationship with Trump. Another reason for North Dakota’s impact in this election is the possibility of Gov. Doug Burgum as Trump’s running mate. It just so happened that I was one of the early supporters of Doug Burgum for governor in 2016. Once again, I let my philosophy take a back seat and chose to support Burgum despite my concerns about some of his policies. Frequent communication to discuss his positions on various issues ensued. At the time I was unsure about his position on abortion, but he convinced me that he was the best man to lead North Dakota.
While Burgum and I have had our differences, I believe he is the best person in the current field to be Trump’s running mate. He stood up to the establishment and demonstrated a resolve to go against the grain on issues he felt strongly about for North Dakota. I broke the story on my BEK TV Show, “Open Range,” about his run for president and voiced my opinion. I felt Burgum with the right breaks could be an alternative if Trump stumbled. As it turned out, Trump’s support continued to grow as people rallied around him while the liberal Democrats blatantly used the justice system to assault a U.S. citizen. As Burgum’s campaign faded and Trump’s strengthened it was apparent Republicans were all in for Trump.
That Trump does not need a native son like Burgum to carry North Dakota is a foregone conclusion, but as I have followed Burgum on the stump for Trump he has blossomed and distinguished himself as the man for the job. He is articulate and energetic with wealthy and has influential allies in technology and the oil and gas industry. He is a solid red state Midwesterner with moderate positions which will draw support from moderate Americans.
The MAGA Trump supporters are solid – maybe what he needs is a Doug Burgum who is ready to step in and bring a stabilizing influence. As a businessman Burgum’s executive skill will complement the free-flowing Trump management style. Burgum undoubtedly brings technical expertise at a time when AI is about to change our lives in significant ways—akin to the internet and cell phone. Maybe America needs a Trump-Burgum ticket: a strong, steady hand in a country and world off course.
