CT’s attorney general reacts to U.S. Supreme Court ruling on Trump immunity – Eyewitness News 3
HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) – Connecticut’s attorney general released a statement about the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on presidential immunity.
The nation’s highest court ruled on Monday that former presidents have some immunity from prosecution, which extended a delay in a Washington criminal case against former President Donald Trump.
The case claimed Trump plotted to overturn his 2020 presidential election loss.
Connecticut Attorney General William Tong said while the court rejected Trump’s claim of absolute immunity from all criminal prosecution, he worried about a president having too much power.
“It affirmed that presidents can be prosecuted for crimes committed in their private capacity – like Trump’s fake slates of electors,” Tong said. “But the Court gave Trump – and all future presidents – far too much unrestrained power for so-called official acts. Even the president – especially the president – must be accountable for abusing the office’s enormous power. Like the dissent, and like well-meaning people across this country, I am concerned today for our democracy – because Donald Trump poses an unprecedent threat to the rule of law, and because the Supreme Court has failed to restrain him. But I remain hopeful. By unnecessarily delaying this decision, the Supreme Court postponed justice for far too long. Now the District Court must move forward quickly to apply the new, imperfect test – and to hold Donald Trump accountable for his crimes.”
The ruling all but ended prospects that Trump could be tried before the 2024 general election in November.
