CNN Anchor Ends Interview When Trump Press Secretary After Attacks CNN Debate Moderators – Forbes

CNN This Morning anchor Kasie Hunt bailed out of an interview with a Trump campaign spokesperson who seemed determined to use the live segment to bash the moderators of this week’s presidential debate, CNN anchors Jake Tapper and Dana Bash.
“Ma’am, I’m going to stop this interview if you keep attacking my colleagues,” Hunt said, interrupting Trump spokesperson Karoline Leavitt. “I would like to talk about Donald Trump and Joe Biden.”
The interview Monday morning had barely begun when Leavitt accused Tapper and Bash of bias, saying “it would take someone five minutes to Google ‘Jake Tapper Donald Trump’ to see that Jake Tapper has consistently compared Donald Trump to Adolph Hitler.”
“That’s why President Trump is knowingly going into a hostile environment on this very network, on CNN, with debate moderators who have made their opinions about him very well known over the past eight years. And their biased coverage of him,” said Leavitt, Trump’s 2024 campaign national press secretary.

President Biden and former President Trump are set to take the stage in Atlanta Thursday in the first debate of the 2024 campaign—and one of the earliest presidential debates ever. After months of attacking Biden as a clueless old man incapable of doing the job, Trump and his supporters have recently shifted gears, suggesting Biden may turn in a strong debate performance.
“He beat Paul Ryan,” Trump said in a podcast interview last week, referring to the 2012 vice presidential debate. “I’m not underestimating him. I assume he’s going to be somebody that will be a worthy debater.”

“So I‘ll just say my colleagues, Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, have acquitted themselves as professionals as they have covered campaigns and interviewed candidates from all sides of the aisle,” Hunt said. “I‘ll also say that if you talk to analysts of previous debates, that if you’re attacking the moderators, you’re usually losing.”
Later Monday, Hunt posted a message on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, saying “you come on my show, you respect my colleagues. Period. I don’t care what side of the aisle you stand on, as my track record clearly shows.”
Leavitt, in her own post on X, said “you cut off my microphone for bringing up the debate moderator’s history of anti-Trump lies. This proved our point that President Trump will not be treated fairly on Thursday.”

“So Jake Tapper can go on the air and spew those lies all they want. But when I simply tried to repeat them, which is relevant because he’s a moderator at Thursday’s debate, they cut me off and kicked me off,” Leavitt said later in a podcast interview with Steve Bannon. “It was honestly shocking what occurred this morning.”
Leavitt also shared a post with clips of Tapper and Bash correctly observing that some of the language Trump has used in recent campaign appearances and interviews mirrors language used in Nazi Germany and by Adolph Hitler—most notably Trump’s recent comment that immigrants are “poisoning the blood of our country.”
“Jake Tapper and Dana Bash are well respected veteran journalists who have covered politics for more than five decades combined,” said a CNN spokesperson. “They have extensive experience moderating major political debates, including CNN’s Republican Presidential Primary Debate this cycle. There are no two people better equipped to co-moderate a substantial and fact-based discussion and we look forward to the debate on June 27 in Atlanta.”
