Attorney General Josh Kaul has filed charges against three people in relation to the 2020 fake electors scheme in Wisconsin, including former Trump attorney Kenneth Chesebro, former Dane County Circuit Court Judge James Troupis and Michael Roman.
The three are charged with felony forgery and are scheduled to be in Dane County court on Sept. 19. A conviction could result in a maximum of six years in prison and fines up to $10,000.
Kenneth Chesebro, 62, and Jim Troupis, 70, and former Trump aide Mike Roman, 51, allegedly delivered Wisconsin’s fake elector paperwork to a Pennsylvania congressman’s staffer in order to get them to then-Vice President Mike Pence on Jan. 6, 2021.

BREAKING: This morning Attorney General Josh Kaul has filed charges against KENNETH CHESEBRO, JAMES TROUPIS and MICHAEL ROMAN in relation to the 2020 fake electors scheme in Wisconsin

Each are facing 1 count of forgery, a felony, in Dane County Circuit Court
The 10 Wisconsin electors, Chesebro and Troupis, Trump’s attorney in Wisconsin, all settled a civil lawsuit brought against them in 2023.
Documents released as part of those settlements showed that the strategy in Wisconsin replicated moves in six other swing states: Michigan, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Arizona, and belatedly New Mexico
In Michigan, 16 people were initially charged with forgery and other crimes. Six Republicans in Nevada, including the state’s GOP party chair and Republican National committeeman, were indicted in December on felony charges.
Meanwhile, 18 people — including Trump and several of his top lawyers — were charged last summer in Georgia. Three of those charged are accused of being fake electors. Several lawyers, including Chesebro, agreed to plea deals.
New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez, a Democrat, said in January that he wouldn’t prosecute. Charges also haven’t been filed in Pennsylvania or Arizona.
Documents from the settlement show how Chesebro was in direct communications with top Trump campaign officials for an assessment of how states were doing with the plan.
Trump lost Wisconsin to Biden, a Democrat, by fewer than 21,000 votes. Trump carried Wisconsin by a similar margin in 2016.
