Allen's evasiveness on Trump's Georgia phone call 'doesn't inspire confidence' – AL.com

Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen would not say whether Donald Trump’s phone call to Georgia’s top election official asking to find votes to help overturn the 2020 presidential election was proper after being asked multiple times at a U.S. Senate hearing Tuesday on election security.
Allen told U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., that he has not received a telephone call like the one Trump made.
“Does it strike you as proper?” the senator asked Allen.
“Listen, I can only take care of what we have in Alabama,” the secretary told the Senate Rules Commitee hearing. “I don’t know exactly what he meant by ‘finding’ those votes …”
The phone call made by Trump to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger is the linchpin of the government’s election racketeering case against Trump.
Ossoff asked several Allen several times if the call was appropriate but Alabama’s secretary of state would not make a judgment.
“I can tell you that as secretary in Alabama, I’m going to follow the law that the Alabama Legislature’s laid out for me to follow in administering the elections,” Allen said.
Ossoff shot back: “Your fear in answering that question doesn’t inspire confidence.”
Testifying along with Allen was Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, a Democrat.
Benson said she also had not received any phone calls like the one Trump made, adding that it is an “inappropriate request of an election official.”
