Former President Donald Trump plans to attend a rally in Richmond on Saturday, three days before the Republican presidential primary on Super Tuesday, March 5.

The Republican and Democratic primaries have been sleepy affairs in Virginia before this week, with Trump and President Joe Biden far ahead in their party contests. Ahead of Tuesday night’s primary results in Michigan, Trump had 110 delegates to 20 for former South Carolina Gov. and U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, nine for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and three for entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy. (DeSantis and Ramaswamy have dropped out.) Biden had 91 delegates to 0 for Rep. Dean Phillips, D-Minn.
Haley has refused to drop her longshot challenge of Trump in the Republican primary, despite a lopsided loss in her home state on Saturday.
Four other contenders on the GOP primary ballot in Virginia have ended their campaigns – DeSantis, Ramaswamy, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, and Ryan Binkley, a Texas pastor and businessman who ended his campaign on Tuesday. Democratic candidate Marianne Williamson also has dropped out of the contest.
Haley plans to appear at rallies at the Westin Hotel in Henrico County on Thursday morning and at the Westin Hotel at Tysons Corner that night. This week, she unveiled a Virginia leadership team that includes former Virginia first lady Susan Allen, wife of former Gov. George Allen; former Republican congressional representatives Tom Davis and Barbara Comstock, both of Fairfax County; and Del. Carrie Coyner, R-Chesterfield.
Virginia is one of 16 states and territories voting for presidential nominees on Super Tuesday.
A Republican candidate needs 1,215 delegates to gain the party’s nomination. There are 48 delegates at stake in Virginia’s Republican primary. A Democratic candidate needs 1,968 delegates to secure the nomination. There are 119 delegates at stake in Virginia’s Democratic primary.
The Trump campaign has dismissed Haley’s continued challenge and declared the race over, but the former president’s planned appearance in Richmond on Saturday shows he’s not taking anything for granted.
