In an interview with CNN on Thursday, Gov. Chris Sununu said he would support Donald Trump as the Republican nominee, even if he were a convicted felon.
“I think right now most of America looks like they would vote for [Trump]… I’m going to support the Republican nominee absolutely. That shouldn’t shock anybody,” Sununu said.
Just hours before his interview on CNN, Sununu told News 9 he doesn’t think Biden or Trump should be the nominee.
“This is still an opportunity to make sure Joe Biden and Donald Trump, neither of them are the nominee or the next president,” Sununu said.
In light of Sununu’s response, political analysts in the Granite State said the governor’s statements could sway second-choice votes away from Haley.
“It really just seems to sort of lower the stakes in the eyes of a lot of voters,” said Chris Galdieri, a political science professor at Saint Anselm College. “We’re not even talking about Donald Trump in 2016. We’re talking about the Donald Trump who perpetrated Jan. 6, who has been indicted for actions he took as president, for actions he took after he left the White House. I think there’s a real danger that this sort of statement just sort of normalizes and mainstreams that behavior that Trump’s engaged in.”
