Dec 1, 2023
A Quinnipiac University poll found that an overwhelming majority of Americans, 71 percent, want television in the courtroom for the federal trial of former President Trump on charges of attempting to overturn the 2020 election.
It’s not surprising, given the trial could be the most consequential in U.S. history; indeed a majority of Americans believe the charges are “very serious.”
Given the strong public interest in viewing the trial first-hand, it’s disappointing that a federal court rule-making advisory committee determined it has no authority to waive Rule 53 that prohibits the broadcasting of federal criminal trials.
When nothing less than the foundation of our democracy, the peaceful transfer of power, is at stake, that inflexibility does the nation a huge disservice. Voters must make their voices heard.
A petition with more than 50,000 supporters is calling on Chief Justice Roberts and the U.S. Judicial Conference to allow a camera in the courtroom so that America may watch U.S. v. Trump unfiltered by news media and partisan spin.
