To the editor:
Has any Republican in Massachusetts, within the party’s rank and file or leadership, publicly denounced Donald Trump’s claims, claims that echo the words of Adolph Hitler in “Mein Kampf”, that immigrants are “poisoning the blood” of real Americans, and that those who dare to criticize the Donald and his rhetoric are “vermin”?
Have any Republicans in leadership positions within the state party dared to publicly condemn the dangerous, demonizing and dehumanizing rhetoric Donald is employing against federal and state law enforcement officials simply trying to do their jobs?
Has a single Republican in Massachusetts mustered the nerve to stand up and publicly denounce the many death threats those public servants have received just for doing their jobs? Have they ackowledged the role their party’s presumed presidential standard bearer’s rhetoric has played in inciting his cult followers to issue such threats?
Does a single Massachusetts Republican of any stature possess the nerve to say publicly that Donald’s pledge to exact vengeance and “retribution” on those he views as his political enemies, if he is returned to power, has no place in a constitutional republic?
Sadly, from what I can tell following Bay State politics from afar, the answer to all those questions is no.
Massachusetts Republicans should realize history will, ultimately, not look kindly on their silence.
They should also remember that, when all is said and, silence really is little more than the voice of complicity.
