Former President Donald Trump did not introduce pettiness into American politics, but he magnified it.
To see pettiness in action, just watch a 2024 Republican presidential primary debate. Watch the actions of the Republican members of the U.S. House, especially when it came to electing a speaker. Watch Trump himself before, during or after his appearances in court.
Observe the pettiness of the apologies for Trump found in conservative newspapers.
I am not talking about the lies about the man. I am bemoaning the fact that these newspapers used to take on real political issues in their editorials, but now remain silent when it comes to Trump. They know their silence is an endorsement for his reelection, and they don’t seem to care.
