Former President Donald Trump on Thursday endorsed Republicans in each of three Louisiana statewide races on Saturday’s runoff ballot.
The Republican kingmaker, who’s campaigning for the GOP presidential nomination while fighting indictments in multiple federal and state courts stemming from his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, backed candidates Liz Murrill for attorney general, John Fleming for treasurer and Nancy Landry for secretary of state.
The three Louisiana Republicans “are outstanding in every way and have my complete and total endorsement,” Trump said in a statement issued by the Louisiana Republican Party.
Murrill has served as Gov.-elect Jeff Landry’s top deputy during his eight-year tenure as state attorney general, and has crafted some of his high-profile legal arguments. She’s running against Democratic trial lawyer Lindsey Cheek.
Fleming is a staunch conservative who co-founded the far-right Freedom Caucus while in Congress and later served as Trump’s deputy chief of staff. He faces Lake Charles-based financial advisor and Democrat Dustin Granger.
Nancy Landry has served for four years as the second-in-command to the current secretary Kyle Ardoin. She faces Democrat Gwen Collins-Greenup, who runs a boutique law firm with offices across Louisiana and has run against Ardoin for secretary of state before.
All three Louisiana Republicans are favored in their races, and the GOP will secure total control of statewide government offices if they’re all elected.
Trump also took credit for his endorsement of Jeff Landry (who’s not related to Nancy Landry). Jeff Landry secured a surprise outright victory in the governor’s primary in October.
“With my strong endorsement, Jeff Landry made history by flipping the seat of Louisiana’s two-term Democrat governor without a runoff,” he said. “Jeff will be a great governor!”
Polls open at 7 a.m. Saturday.
