Jennifer Lawless, the chair of the political science department at the University of Virginia, joined GoLocal LIVE just minutes after Ohio Republican Congressman Jim Jordan lost his third election for Speaker of the House.
“A few minutes ago, 25 Republicans voted against [Jordan’s] speakership. He can only afford to lose, depending on how many people are in the chamber. between three and five, and so Congress is at a standstill — business cannot be conducted,” said Lawless.
“The current acting speaker [Patrick McHenry] is empowered only to hold votes on electing a new speaker, and it's hard to imagine a worse time — we're approaching the precipice of a government shutdown; there's Ukraine aid that's hanging in the balance and now the new conflict that we're seeing the U.S. get involved in in the Middle East means that we need a functioning government and one chamber of Congress is not functioning,” said Lawless.
After Jordan's defeat, the Republican caucus removed him as the nominee and is expected to consider other candidates early next week.

Trump’s Lawyer Flips
Lawless discussed the implications of the news that Trump’s attorney, Sidney Powell, had flipped and agreed to plead guilty in the Georgia case.
“Well, assuming that [Powell's] going to tell the truth, and I think again this is an important assumption because up until now she generally has not — her plea deal basically had her reverse her statements about everything regarding election interference in Georgia and the gathering of information and voting machines,” said Lawless.  “But assuming that she is going to tell the truth and that she provided credible information to strike this deal, Donald Trump and his various codefendants have to be quite worried because she was one of the few people who were privy to specific conversations and reactions of Donald Trump before during and after January 6th.”
“So this is not good news for any of those defendants and it's certainly not good news for Donald Trump,” said Lawless.
“The other thing that I would note is that this makes it also a lot more likely that other people will strike deals as well, so she's now the second who has cut a deal as the trials and as jury selection nears and as dates get set — there are going to be more and more people who fall into this category and Donald Trump is going to likely be one of a handful of the last men standing,” said Lawless.
Just minutes after Lawless’ appearance, another Trump lawyer — Kenneth John Chesebro — also pled guilty in the Georgia case.
