On Wednesday, September 6, Former U.S. President Donald Trump will be appearing in court in Georgia to face trial for 34 felony counts in a hush money scheme.
The former president was first accused in April, when he was accused of altering his tax records to cover up payments to his personal lawyer who assisted in silencing claims that he had an extramarital affair with a porn star. His accusers claim that these falsified records could have affected the outcome of the 2016 presidential election.
“The defendant, Donald J. Trump, falsified New York business records in order to conceal an illegal conspiracy to undermine the integrity of the 2016 presidential election and other violations of election laws,” said Assistant District Attorney Christopher Conroy.
Trump pleaded not guilty to the charges, maintaining his innocence to the court as well as his political base. He claimed the charges to be fraudulent, and designed to interfere with his future candidacy
“This fake case was brought only to interfere with the upcoming 2024 election and it should be dropped immediately,” Trump said in a speech to supporters at his Mar-A-Lago hotel.
After an initial arraignment in Manhattan, the trial will begin and be held in Fulton County Superior court in Atlanta. Trump, as well as 18 other defendants involved in the case surrendered to be booked at Fulton County Jail, and all but one were released on bond.
Regardless of conviction, Trump can still run for and win in the 2024 election.
