Eric Adams says he would consider other jobs, ‘no formal offers’ made

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Friday he plans to keep up his reelection campaign amid chatter about a possible Trump administration position, though he suggested he’s open to hearing about other opportunities to serve the country.
“Serving New Yorkers as their mayor is the only job I’ve ever wanted. I’m proud of the progress we’ve made lowering crime, improving schools, building housing, and cutting costs for working families — and I remain the best person to lead this city forward,” Adams said in a statement shared by a spokesperson on social platform X.
“While I will always listen if called to serve our country, no formal offers have been made. I am still running for reelection, and my full focus is on the safety and quality of life of every New Yorker.”
The statement comes amid reports that the incumbent mayor could exit the race, though he and his team have repeatedly refuted such claims. Adams was expected to make an “important announcement” later Friday afternoon.
The New York Times and New York Post this week reported that top White House officials were in talks about a potential job for Adams in President Trump’s administration as a means of sharpening the challenge against Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, who’s become a GOP target.
Trump said Thursday he’d “like to see two people drop out” of the contest and “have it be a one-on-one, and I think that’s a race that could be won.”
Adams met with Trump envoy Steve Witkoff in Florida earlier this week, according to The Associated Press, and the New York Post reported Friday that Adams was set to meet with the White House in D.C. next week. CBS News has also reported, citing a close friend and adviser to the mayor, that Adams could be out of the race within a week.
Adams — who has been embattled by low favorability ratings and now-dropped bribery charges — is running for a second mayoral term as an independent after Mamdani won the Democratic primary, which Adams didn’t take part in.
