One-time Republican gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon said former President Donald Trump told her to change her messaging on abortion during her 2022 campaign, but was too late, she said on her podcast Wednesday.
“You came to me and you said, ‘you’ve got to talk differently about abortion.’ And we could not pivot, we could not pivot in time,” Dixon said. “You were absolutely right, sir.”
From Oct. 2022: Tudor Dixon asks to set abortion aside from Michigan governor’s race
Dixon was briefly interviewing Trump for an episode of The Tudor Dixon Podcast, where she lavished praise on the former commander-in-chief, who she said spent time with her late father, without asking him directly about the four indictments he’s facing.
Trump told Dixon there’s a way to deftly handle abortion that avoided the pitfalls she fell into. Trump has not offered a specific stance on abortion and has not said whether he’d back a national ban on abortion.
“It didn’t happen to me because there’s a way of talking about it,” Trump said. “I think exceptions are very important, I think you need the exceptions, you and I talked about that.”
He also had praise for Dixon and her effort to win the gubernatorial race.
“You were really something, you were a terrific friend of mine and we worked hard together,” Trump said of Dixon. “You put your heart into it and you did a good job.”
Abortion became the marquee issue of the election. With a proposal on the ballot that enshrined access to abortion in Michigan’s constitution, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer tied herself to the issue and defeated Dixon by nearly 11 percentage points.
The leadership of the Michigan Republican Party later blamed the issue – and Dixon’s performance – as the reason behind their historic losses.
The media personality turned gubernatorial candidate has returned to life in conservative media since ending her campaign for governor. She regularly appears on channels such as Fox News and Newsmax.
