According to a report from Punchbowl News, former President Donald Trump said, “Milwaukee, where we are having our convention, is a horrible city” during a closed-door meeting with House Republicans Thursday morning.
During Thursday morning’s meeting on Capitol Hill, where no cameras were present, Trump reportedly made the controversial comment while discussing campaign strategies and other GOP priorities ahead of the 2024 election.

Wisconsin’s Republican congressional delegates offered differing accounts of the comment’s context.
“I was in the room. President Trump did not say this. There is no better place than Wisconsin in July,” posted Rep. Bryan Steil on his X account.

Scott Fitzgerald told WISN 12 News Trump’s comments were in reference to “election integrity” and the need to improve Republican performance in urban areas.

“Once he’s settled in with his parole officer, I am certain he will discover that Milwaukee is a wonderful, vibrant and welcoming city full of diverse neighborhoods and a thriving business community,” Rep. Gwen Moore posted on X.

Sen. Tammy Baldwin also responded on X: “Milwaukee makes the greatest beer, brats, and motorcycles in the world. It’s home to some of our most vibrant communities, hardest workers, and is a part of what makes Wisconsin the best state in the nation. Donald Trump wouldn’t understand even if a jury told him so.”
