Donald Trump has failed to secure a bond to satisfy the nearly half-a-billion-dollar civil fraud judgment against him, his lawyers told an appeals court on Monday.
The former president’s attorneys argued that finding a company to back a bond in excess of $454m plus millions of dollars in interest is a “practical impossibility,” and one that raises the possibility that New York Attorney General Letitia James can begin seizing his assets unless the court intervenes.
Mr Trump has approached “about 30 surety companies through four separate brokers” to no avail – one week before Ms James can begin collecting.
Meanwhile, the former president is once again facing criticism over his use of inflammatory rhetoric after he declared at a campaign rally in Ohio on Saturday: “If I don’t get elected it’s going to be a bloodbath for the country.”
The Republican presidential challenger used the phrase as part of a dire economic forecast for the American auto industry but was swiftly rebuked by the White House over its wider implications, with spokespeople for Joe Biden accusing him of “endorsing political violence” – particularly given that the candidate had also bemoaned the fate of the “J6 hostages” at the same event.
Alex Woodward reports:
The judge overseeing Donald Trump’s criminal trial stemming from hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels has rejected the former president’s attempts to block her testimony.
On Monday, New York Judge Juan Merchan also rejected Mr Trump’s attempts to block testimony from Michael Cohen, his former attorney who allegedly supported a scheme to bury compromising details of Mr Trump’s affairs leading up to the 2016 presidential election.
Judge Merchan also rejected Mr Trump’s attempts to block testimony from former Playboy model Karen McDougal, who allegedly had an affair with Mr Trump before his presidency.

He just wants to be loved, doesn’t he?
I honestly don’t know why he doesn’t just stick to playing 18 holes and trolling celebrities on his phone and give up on this politics lark altogether.
He’d be much happier.
One person who could well do without him is Liz Cheney, who pushes back angrily against his smears below, which arise from allegations made by his former aide Kash Patel in The Federalist claiming that her January 6 congressional committee deliberately withheld information during its 2022 hearings, a charge she hotly denies.
Here’s Trump claiming the media has willfully misinterpreted his comments over the weekend in order to discredit him.
Alex Woodward looks at what happens if Donald Trump can’t secure a bond to appeal his civil fraud case:
Attorney General Letitia James says she is prepared to recover the former president’s assets
The MediaBuzz host gave the Republican presidential contender a chance to condemn the Russian president, just returned to power in a sham election, over the highly suspicious death of heroic dissident Alexei Navalny in an Arctic prison camp last month and, of course, he flubbed his answer, reluctant to call out a dictator he has repeatedly championed.
Tamar Hallerman of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Donald Trump and seven of his co-defendants in the Georgia election interference case want to appeal Judge Scott McAfee’s ruling on their push to disqualify Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.
A Trump-aligned candidate running for Congress in Nevada’s competitive 3rd district, was the subject of a scathing op-ed accusing her of infidelity, lying and raising a murderer – written by her former mother-in-law.
The piece, published last week in The Nevada Globe about Elizabeth Helgelien, was written by Christine Halseth whose late son, Daniel Halseth, was married to her for 11 years.
Mr Halseth was murdered in 2021 by the teenage daughter he shared with Ms Helgelien, Sierra Halseth, and her boyfriend Aaron Guerrero. The pair stabbed Mr Halseth before setting his house on fire and attempting to flee. They were caught and are now serving life sentences.
