Oregon U.S. Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer is endorsing Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election.
The first-term Republican representative from Happy Valley, representing Oregon’s 5th congressional district, announced the endorsement Wednesday.
In a social media post, Chavez-DeRemer said Trump had “clearly outlined how Joe Biden’s policies have been a disaster for our country.” She said the country needed someone to secure the border, strengthen the economy and improve public safety.
Chavez-DeRemer is one of a handful of Congressional Republicans who represent a district that voted for President Biden in 2020.
She will likely face either Oregon Rep. Janelle Bynum or Jamie McLeod-Skinner in the November general election.
Chavez-DeRemer’s endorsement of the former president came the same day that former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley ended her campaign for the Republican nomination.
Oregon’s other Republican member of Congress, Cliff Bentz, endorsed Trump in January.
The former South Carolina governor and United Nations ambassador was the last major candidate to challenge former President Donald Trump for the GOP nomination.
Oregon’s primary will be held May 21, and the Oregon Supreme Court is weighing a challenge to bar Trump from the ballot on the grounds that he engaged in insurrection.
James Hieb, a Canby Republican, was appointed to replace Drazan when she resigned to focus on her gubernatorial campaign in early 2022.
