Trump holds 'Get Out the Vote' rally in North Charleston – Live 5 News WCSC
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – Former President Donald Trump will be in North Charleston Wednesday ahead of the South Carolina Republican presidential primary.
Trump held a “Get Out the Vote” rally at the Charleston Area Convention Center.
Doors for the event opened at 4 p.m. and the former president took the stage around 7:30 p.m.
Tickets for the event can be found here.
The South Carolina Republican Party’s Presidential Primary will be Feb. 24, and the early voting period is from Monday through Feb. 22.
The latest Winthrop University poll shows Trump holds a commanding lead among South Carolina voters over former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley.
The February poll shows 65% of likely voters in the state would vote for Trump compared to the 29% that say they would vote for Haley. That percentage expands to 72% of Republican voters compared to Haley’s 24%. Winthrop’s likely voters include Republicans, Republican-leaning independent voters and independents who are “very likely” or “absolutely certain” to vote.
When just independent voters are polled, the margin is much closer with 42.6% of independent voters saying they would vote for Trump and 42.3% of voters saying they would vote for Haley. Ten percent of the polled voters said they would vote for someone else.
If the presidential election were to happen today, 50% of voters said they would vote for Trump in a rematch against Joe Biden who collected 35% of respondents.
In a matchup between Haley and Biden, 47% of respondents said they would vote for Haley while just 29% would vote for Biden.
In the same poll, only 32% of respondents believe Biden is doing a good job as president. When limited to just Republicans that number falls to just 6%.
Ahead of Trump’s visit to North Charleston, Charleston County Democratic Party Chair Sam Skardon released the following statement:
“Charleston County has already rejected Donald Trump twice and we will again in 2024.
“The Lowcountry’s brave servicemembers and veterans do not want a President who sells out to Russia. The working people of Charleston do not want a President whose only major accomplishment was a tax cut for millionaires. The law-abiding citizens of Charleston do not want a President who has been indicted 91 times and who attempted to violently overturn the results of an election.”
The stop in North Charleston is Trump’s second stop in the state this week. He held a rally in Conway on Saturday.
Trump’s main message at Saturday’s rally to his supporters was to get out the vote. He says he needs a strong turnout to send a message that he is the Republican nominee.
“If you want to save America, vote for Trump. Get out and vote. Vote Republican,” Trump said.
Heading into South Carolina’s Republican primary and the states that follow, Trump is still balancing appearances on the campaign trail with those in the courtroom as he faces more than 90 criminal charges from federal and state indictments.
His Democratic and Republican opponents have said those legal challenges make him a liability in a general election and to the country. But Trump called them “selective political persecution.”
